Groninger Parliamentary Debate
The Groninger Parliamentary Debate was hosted by Teunis Dokter who acted as the event manager, which is of course something closely related to project management, but with a different focus. Eleven Dutch political parties were present and it was organized in Groningen. The event was organized aimed at entertaining and informing visitors as well as offering other (political) organizations the chance to talk with fellow politicians or to meet new people. It was organized on a non-profit basis and financed by sponsors and donors and became a great success. In the end, the event location was even too small to host everyone interested in the event.
Acting as event manager is complicated
I acted as the event manager of this specific event and worked on communicating and organizing various tasks and delegating them to the volunteers. I made sure political parties were invited in a correct manner, communicated with the technical crew that was responsible for video and audio, and laid down instructions on how to use the space in which the event took place, wrote requirements for the format of the presentation, and was also responsible for the events budget and finances. The latter was really the most exciting part, as the event could only be organized thanks to the work of volunteers and donors.
Everyone worked hard, had fun and afterward we were proud of what we achieved in such short notice. The event also gained press coverage during and from time to time participants still like to look back at the event and remember the hard we put in was paid off.
